How to Grow and Re-Bloom Amaryllis: A Simple Guide
1. Choosing the Right Bulb
Look for large, firm, blemish-free bulbs in your preferred color (red, white, pink, striped).
2. Planting the Bulb
Choose a pot 1-2 inches wider than the bulb.
Fill with well-draining potting mix.
Place the bulb with the pointed end up, exposing about one-third of it above the soil.
Water lightly and place in a warm, bright location (but not direct sunlight).
3. Watering and Caring
Water sparingly until shoots appear, then water regularly, letting soil dry slightly.
Fertilize every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
4. Forcing the Bulb to Bloom
Place in a warm spot (65-75°F) after planting.
Turn the pot regularly to encourage even growth.
Expect blooms in 6-8 weeks.
5. Re-Blooming
After blooming, cut back the flower stalk and keep the leaves for energy.
Continue watering and fertilizing until late summer, then stop watering and rest the plant in a cool, dark place for 8-12 weeks.
After resting, replant and restart the process.
6. Troubleshooting
No Bloom: Ensure enough light and nutrients.
Yellow Leaves: Check for overwatering or insufficient light.
Pests: Treat with insecticidal soap.
7. Tips for Success
Use stakes to support tall stems.
Plant multiple bulbs for a longer bloom period.
